BIG problems!

After normal use I shutdown my system. A few hours later I go to power it up again and what do I get? no startup! It goes to post and shows the CPu speed and just before the memory check it freezes somehow. I've tried resetting CMOS, reseating the CPU, taking out one memory stick and swapping back in forth. No combination seems to work. I got it to startup once at 100Mhz FSB but never again. I think my CPU may be toast :-\

what should I do to fix it? my specs are below.

I would have started with the ram too...

I'm not sure what to tell you unless you have another CPU or motherboard to swap.

You might want to check out the power supply as well. Sometimes a dying PSU can give you trouble during start-up.

my PSu seems fine I guess...everything is getting power. It seems to be either my CPU is almost gone or my memory is going bad (went bad)

strange...now after leaving it off for the whole day and trying again it started to get working. I managed to startup from a floppy and reflash the BIOS. Now it seems to be fine. I'm gonna just do a check of the OS and my files and make sure that part of the system is ok...sure makes me feel better to get something going though.

I know there was a flurry of problems with Crucial DDR memory a couple months back. I believe a bunch of crucial memory bought in the late winter (November possibly) of 2001 was defective. It was posted on other boards. If this is the case, you can return it. However, if your comp is working now - I guess you can ignore my rantings.

Hmm what motherboard are you using DREDD? I've had this same exact problem with the MSI K7T266 PRO2-RU board about 6 months ago. It worked after I reflashed the BIOS but I can't take it past 100Mhz FSB. I decided to send the board back to newegg and got a SOYO Dragon+ instead, worked fine ever since. I guess the storal of my mory here is that it could be the mobo that's causing problems, I don't think it was the CPU.

well, I'm gonna go ahead and get an intel Mobo ;-)

I know it's a bit more money than a new AMD but the 533Mhz Bus is great on the new northwoods so I'm gonna give it ago. I also hear intel is more stable

just purchased the Abit BD7II and Northwood P4 2.26Ghz retail box. Should be good. So...do I have to install the OS again anyway? If that's the case then can I backup my games somehow or would those need a reinstall anyway?

the thing is...it just happened. one day it decided not to startup. I had it running fine then shutdown. A few hours later decided to start it up and it went to the crapper on me ;-( Oh well...sell it i suppose it could just be something real simple that I overlooked. the new P4 should be here on wed of next week then it's install and get the OS up and running. Should be alot faster too :-)
