ZIP Disk question
Can an IBM disk be formatted as MAC?
I can't seem to find the answer anywhere. Thanks, Nhbilly

Yes...but don't. If you have a Mac that is powerPC or better, it will read PC zip disks. The PC will not read MAC formatted disks.

Thanks guys!
I have a MAC at home and at school they use IBM computer. I just though it would be better if I format it to be IBM so that my MAC can still use it. vice versa. What do yo guys think? |

I zip disk is a zip disk it can be formated on either system.
However... Just as Bires said and not nhbilly if it is one of the MACs that can read PC zip disks leave it PC formatted. That w ay both computers can read it because a PC will not read a MAC formatted disk just as Bires said. I had a photoshop class and we used MACs in the class but I did all my work on my home PC, worked great for me |

I don't think so - A few years back the company I was working for at the time worked a lot w/Zip disks (CDRs will still expensive). I seem to recall a problem with re-formatting the Mac Zip disks to IBM. You could go from IBM to Mac format (not reading, formatting) with no problem, but for some reason, the Zip disks that were formatted in a Mac would give all sorts of errors if we tried to re-format them to IBM. |

I'm a graphic designer for Kinkos full time and I work with tons of Zip disks on both PCs and Macs. We use PC formatted Zip disks unless specified by a customer otherwise (ie save onto a Mac format 'only'). (As it's already been said) you can use PC formatted Zip disks in a Mac with no problem whatsoever...but the second you put a disk into a PC which is NOT PC format, if you try to access the disk (whether Zip or floppy) it will ask to format it and nothing else. UNLESS you have a program like TransMac on your PC (the only program I'm familiar with) which reads Mac format disks...that's the only way that a Mac format disc will be accessed by a PC without asking to format it to PC.
You can easily reformat the disc for any platform; it's under the Format options. Just either choose DOS or Mac OS. I've never had any problems whatsoever taking a Mac formatted disc and converting it to PC or vice versa. Hope this helps. Last edited by zero2dash : 07-31-2002 at 09:24 PM. |

This was like back in '98, I believe, so they may have improved things since then. I guess the only way to find out is to give it a try! |
