Router for SBC DSL???
Figured someone will have networked SBC DSL and be able to give me an answer. I recently subscribed to SBC DSL, should be turned on tomorrow. So, I of course want to connect with more than 1 PC, and I would like to do it via a router. I know that it would have to support PPPoE. The question I have is that it is a Speedstream modem, and SBC wants you to install it via their install program. Is this needed, or will a router be able to take the username and password and connect automatically and work? Has anyone actually done this? And finally, anyone have any cheap but good router suggestions, preferably wireless, with a three port or more switch, similar to the D-Link DI-713p? Thanks for any help/suggestions anyone can make!

I have been using Bell Canada DSL for about 3 months with a DLINK 704 router with no issues. Bell uses there own PPPoE software that you can load on your PC (up to 3) but you don't need to install it if you purchase a router that supports PPPoE (all now do). Simply hook up your PC to the router and configure it for you DSL service (you may need to clone your PC MAC address as some routers, link my DLINK 704 have non-routing MAC addresses), connect it to the DSL modem and you are good to go. The DLINK has been great but see my review of the Compex Wireless gateway, it beats the DLINK easily.

they may need to install the soft before they leave ( if a tech install ), if that is the case just uninstall it when the leave, they dont support routers. I have SBC DSL and use a router no problme.
all ya need to do is configure the router with your user name and password and it should work no problem |

I've used a Netgear RT311 with both SBC Ameritech DSL and ATTBI (cable modem) Internet. Works flawlessly with both.
The key here is that you want to make sure the router does PPoE, which most do. You enter your username and password in the router's config file and blast away. I refused to use SBC's installation program on my computer, in spite of what their *ahem* "tech support" people say. I know you can set up a PPoE connection manually in XPpro, which is what I did to get the thing working in the first place. Good luck getting up and running. Be sure to visit dslreports.com and view the Forum for SBC (or whichever tentacle of the SBC octopus you happen to be attached to) to get tips and tweaks! ![]() Last edited by caribiner23 : 07-30-2002 at 02:21 PM. |
