Hard Drive Shipment
I got up this morning and noticed that UPS? left the
box outside with an order from Buy.com along with that 40 GB Maxtor hard drive from Staples that is only $35 after rebate. Well, the large brown box was upside down and it was bent up a little and wasn't sealed very good. I heard some jiggling inside the Maxtor box, so I opened it and it was just the mounting rails. The drive was still inside the foam rubber pads. I lightly shook it and there is nothing that sounds weird. (Since I get so much stuff through UPS and Fedex. they just drop the stuff near the door. I have no problem with that) Anyone know how forgiving hard drives are during questionably rough shipping? I am trying to figure whether to call Staples or not. |

Hard drives are usually pretty safe in shipping, especially if they're packed and suspended in their little foam cocoons.
Was the Maxtor box dented or damaged in any way? If not, I would hook it up but keep the receipt handy just in case. If the Maxtor box was damaged in any way, I'd consider making a phone call. For what it's worth, I bought a Zip drive a few years ago from Staples online and the package showed up at my office in the condition you described. Maybe they don't realize that some of the stuff they ship is kind of fragile. (The Zip drive was okay.) |

The Maxtor box was not dented or anything and the seal was still on it. They don't use the suspended cocoon thing like with CDRW's. They just use the thick foam pads.

Yeah, that's the normal packaging for the Maxtor... You should be fine though, I think. I'd just run scandisk and maybe a use SiSoft Sandra to put a little stress on the drive. If nothing pops up, you should be fine.

My experience with buy.com shipping is very bad. I bought an IBM 2.5" drive once and it came doa. Instead of having a 10GB hard drive I had a $200 precussion instrument. The thing was so crapilly packed all the mechanics inside the drive were moving around like crazy. Then another time I ordered a set of sennheiser headphones and the box it was shipped in was fine like the hard drive so it wasn't ups' fault however the box for the headphone had a nice gash in the front and there were scratches on the headphones because of it. Anyhow thats my experience.
