P10 vs DMA?

i have an IBM deskstar ATA100 drive in my ASUS K7V333 mobo... the thing is that XP recognizes the drive as a P10 only... i think it should be viewing it as ultra DMA like my cd-rw... any thoughts? isnt P10 a lot slower?

thanks

set it to dma if available and restart...it should pick it up after you do that.

make sure your cables are at least UDMA100 compatable and your bios is configured properly. change the IDE channel settings to show it UDMA 100 capable.

pio is a lot slower, yes, but that's not the main problem. The main problem is the processor usage when the pio device is used.

the legendary Apex himself. I'm honored

I switched around my ATA Cables, and randomly now both my primary and secondary are reading Ultra DMA. the difference in so far as hard drive access goes is definitely noticeable. thanks everyone!

now if only i could figure out why i keep getting the blue screen of death....

Yes, I believe that on the newer HD cables, on adapter is set for the Master drive, and one is set for the Slave. Mine just didn't read when I had them set backwards.

I don't think this'll stop anything though - the better you idiot-proof a system, the more impressive the idiot becomes.
