system building questions

ok, i'm trying to build a computer for the first time, so i have some stupid n00b questions.

1.) i have an Intel CA801e motherboard that is the base for the system. is there anywhere that offers diagrams of the different boards and shows which connectors are for what components? I have a general idea of where most of the stuff needs to go, but some of the connectors (like the hard drive light, the power light, the power switch, etc, don't have clearly labeled recepticals on the board). basically, i could probably guess, but i don't want to do anything stupid and fry the board.

2.) i am installing a maxtor HD (the one from staples last week). i got it today and discovered that the "Max-Blast" installation software is on a 3.5" floppy. i wasn't planning on putting a floppy in the system (no use for it). is it possible to install the HD manually without using Maxtor's software?

i would greatly appreciate anyone that could help me with these questions. tia!

1) I would highly recommend going to your Mobo's site and checking to see if they have an instruction manual for you to D/L. The pin connector's for the light's ect are generally in the lower right corner of the board and are sometimes marked in tiny white letters. I know ABIT and ASUS have manuals online. (Where's your Mobo manual?)

2) You should be able to just slap the HD in and then install the OS just fine without having to install the floppy. If you are going for RAID just make sure you have the HD in IDE 1 or 2, otherwise Windows most likely won't recognize the HD (at least this has been my experience with XP). You can always change around the IDE ports later when you have the software installed.

thanks for the info.

i don't have the mobo manual because a friend gave the mobo to me, and it didn't have the manual. i've looked at intel's site, and they don't seem to have anything, but i'll look further.

thanks for the hard drive information, as well.

Give this a try, Whitak...

http://www.intel.com/support/motherb...810/ca_con.htm

Pins run like this:

15 ....... 1
14 ....... 2

This also might help:

ftp://download.intel.com/support/mot...0/73308201.pdf

Specifically page 50...

And don't worry about the MaxBlast software. You won't need it on an 810 motherboard. It's more designed for old systems that have bios problems with large drives.

I had to guess once. I got the power and reset buttons mixed up. You had to put the reset button to turn the thing on.
