usb 2.0 question
I really want usb 2.0 for my computer. How would I go about getting it for my computer. Mostly the usb extentions that I've seen plugs directly into a pci slot...is that the only way to go? Does it need a extra external power supply to power it up? I'm here in China and found a 3 1/2 slot that holds 5 usb 2.0 and 3 firewire slots. that plugs into a card that fits into a pci slot. It also looks like the cable is a ide cable, that transfers data between the 3 1/2 and the card, which I don't know if that can transfer the whole usb 2.0 data transfer rate. Anywho, I hope this makes sense...sorry it's so jumbled!

I have no idea that thing you found is, but adding USB 2.0 is just like adding any other PCI card.

Yeah, I only know of adding usb 2.0 by adding a PCI card, but the good news is that most of the cards I've seen are pretty cheap, like $20 or so......

Do you guys think I should get a usb 2.0 and a fire wire combo...or just leave it as usb 2.0? I don't see many fire wire stuff out anymore...

Isn't the Apple Ipod firewire for both Macs and the new Windows version?

Video cameras are firewire, and probably won't go to USB 2.0 anytime soon because firewire is so entrenched in the MM industry. Firewire is better then USB 2.0 for 3 reasons: 1) Firewire is less CPU intensive. Your whole system will run slower when you are doing USB 2.0 transfers. 2) Firewire is can send and recieve at the same time. Not important for CD-Burners, very important for harddrives. 3) Firewire has a higher current rating. It can supply external drives with power, doing away with extra power cords. (Presuming the drive supports this.)

imho, I see firewire as more useful than usb 2.0 ever will be. Thats just me though I guess. I have no clue what kind of device I would need to use usb 2.0 with. All highspeed devices I'll use firewire i.e. camcorders and hard drives. Everything else. . . usb 1.1 is good enough, unless if I need a high speed mouse?

here is what I was trying to descibe in my first post. http://store6.yimg.com/I/cablesonline_1700_3311358
This is the exact one I saw here in China...for a whole lot less...it's like 60 bucks US...instead of what they are asking. The thing is, the cable looks like a regular ide cable, and don't ide cables have a max transfer rate...I forgot what it was, but I don't think it was the rate a USB 2.0 can do. here are the full specs http://www.cablesonline.net/firandusb20c.html |
