Interesting ebay auction here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=2045707367 I have an 8100. It's nice to know I can upgrade it, but right now I'd rather spend the money to upgrade the GF 2 MX in my desktop.

CPU?
You mentioned that the CPU was also upgradable. Can you put a 1.6Ghz chip in a Inspiron 8000?

Pat on the Back time.
Thanks for the great article. You put in one place a lot of the information that I spent hours in finding on the Dell Talk Forums. I upgraded from the GForce 2 (32 megs) (the only option available when I ordered my 8100) to a GForce 4 440 (64 megs). It went very smoothly and I'm very pleased with the results.

Latitude C810 vs. Inspiron 8100
I have the Latitude C810, which is the business version based on the same platform with a 1.13 Ghz PIII, 512 MB, 48 GB HDD, and GeForce 2 GO 32MB. Can it also be upgraded with a new GPU using the same procedure? I would suspect so, but would like to know before I get any crazy ideas. Don't get me wrong, it plays most games at 1600x1200 just fine, but the new 440 looks smashing!
Thanks ahead of time. |

Heheh, I was really surprised when it hit...I had submitted articles to /. before but they never put them up. Then all of the sudden GA is down, so I go to /. and sure enough, there it is. Pretty cool stuff. I hope you guys liked the article, there is more good stuff to come...
To answer a few questions. justink: No, the 8000 wont be able to hit 1.6ghz. The 8000 uses the P3 processor with 100mhz front side bus. You might be able to find a 1ghz that uses that (the P3M's use 133mhz), but if you can find a 1ghz/100mhz processor you should be able to slap it in there and get an upgrade. Your laptop will also accept a new video card. Puhlboy: I will try and find out about the C810. LK |

OK I read the review about how to Mod a Inspiron.. Now I have a I8000 and would also like the nvidia card, Is it possible. and whats the price:
Any Instructions.. Does this void the warranty.. And how does dell sell parts like these to anyone.. Also since they sell these for there own customers I would think they dont void your warranty.. If I wanted it I would call dell and tell them I wanted what? Also is there any other mods I can do to the Laptop? I get around 17-20 FPS in UT (THE OLD ONE) and I believe thats pretty low so is that standard for my card or is something wrong. I have the newest drivers from dells site.. I can live with UT Performance but now UT2003 LOOKS LIKE CRAP!! Also the Res in UT is set at 1024x768 i8000 900 MHZ P3 256 mB RAM 15 in UXGA LCD ATI MOBILITY M4 32 MB (Gives crappy performance in UT - 17 fps, and now with UT2003 its worse..) WIN XP PRO (PC ACTUALLY CAME WITH WIN2k PRO) Sony 8x CD-R TOshiba DVD Got my HD Changed from HItachi 20 Gb to IBM Travelstar, SOMETHING WAS WRONG - Dell Replaced because I have Complete CARE IF ANY MORE SPEC Questions email me at Raheel@comcast.net PLEASE REPLY AT Raheel@Comcast.net I Really appreciate your help.. |

Identifying i8000 monitor manufacturer
First of all thanks for the great report and benchmarks with the i8100 upgrade to the nVidia 4 400. Your work is so very helpful and encouraging!
I have an 8000 with a nVidia GeForce 2 Go card. I would like to try the upgrade. I've been reading where it works better with some monitors than others. I've spent hours in Dell forums trying to find out how to identify my monitor's manufacturer. It's a 15" UXGA TFT Display LR1OUTN. That information is from my bill of sale. But how can I find out if it's made by Samsung or Hitachi or whoever? Thanks for any help! |
