problem with mouse...

okay, so this isn't really a technical question, but i thought i'd ask anyway...

i recently got an optical mouse, so i stopped using my mousepad. but as time went on, i noticed my mouse wasn't moving as smoothly across the surface of my desk. when i flipped it over, i found this weird black rubbery film caked onto the four little contact pads on the bottom of the mouse. i scraped it off, but it came back. can anyone tell me what this is, and how to prevent it from happening? is is just dust buildup from the surface of the desk?

i also looked at my old mousepad again and noticed that the same stuff had colleced in little tiny dots on it's surface. someone please help... it's weirding me out...

its mouse excrement. . . . Really though you're right its just dust. Be sure to keep your mousing area clean thats about all you can do for prevention.

well alrighty! thanks for all the advice, errbody! it is much appreciated, and i'm relieved to know it wasn't some sort of mysterious alien residue from that one time they, um... with the mouse... and... um... sledgehammer, uh.... nevermind...

on a side note, how exactly do you pronounce your name, tweeteresa?
