Building new computer.

Hey guys I'm thinking about building my 1st computer. I don't have a lot of money to spend. I need the computer for the internet, running programs like PageMaker 6.5 and others. I just need this computer to last for about a 1-2 years then hopefully I'll be out of college and have a good job and build myself a high end machine. Where are the best internet site to go to for the best prices and which manufactuers do you recommend? Thanks guys.

www.pricegrabber.com www.yahoo.com (go to shopping, some places are high s/h though beware) and the best place to start with:

www.pricewatch.com

Brand-wise it all really depends on which route you're going. Also whats your budget?

I have actually thought that it would be great if a manual was put together by gotapexers on building a new comp, recommendations (low, mid, and high end comps), etc. and then gotapex can publish it on the site somewhere and it can be updated as needed periodically. There is so much knowledge here.

I know I will probably be trying my hand at this sometime next year and the info would be awesome.

I would go with Newegg...they are a really good company and I have not had ANY trouble with them yet. *knock on wood*

As far as a burner goes, yes, I would still recommend lite-on.

I would go with the CPU you are getting with a good Epox motherboard.

The video card I would get is a GF4 ti4200...relatively cheap and fast.

I have a Pioneer 16x DVD drive and I love it.

A WD special edition drive would be nice.

All inside of a chieftec case.

I don't think this'll stop anything though - the better you idiot-proof a system, the more impressive the idiot becomes.

So for I've got:
ECS motherboard $55
AMD 1600+ $53
DVD Lite-on 16x $40
CDRW Lite-on 40x12x48 $52
Western Digital HD $80
RAM not sure but DDR want 1GIG but will go with 512 $130-$260
Case + power Enemax+530PS $80
Keyboard and mouse $30

That comes to $520-$650

What else do I need?? Better prices or parts?

Well, you must have a videocard: judging by the system you've chosen so far, I'd recommend an ATI 8500 or a Ti4200. And when you are looking at prices, don't forget to incorporate shipping and tax as well. Other than that, the system looks fine. The biggest thing is to just look for some reviews on the parts you are getting, and see if they do what you expect them to do. If you are just wanting this system to get you through college, it will do that.

I don't recommend the ECS board...they are a budget board maker that I've heard many a horror sotry about and I wouldn't go with them. Maybe get a MSI or Gigabyte board. Those two are not all that expensive...maybe around 30 dollars more...and they would be more reliable imo.

You are wasting $$$ on the ECS motherboard with the AliMagiK1 chip. You should have gotten either KT266A or KT333 motherboards. You don't need 1GB of RAM so I suggest you to get a stick of fast PC2700 memory.

Theres an online store that has the aluminum version of the Antec 1030 with like a 400 watt power supply for under $60. Much better value. If I were you I'd wait for a frys combo deal with a decent cpu and mobo. The one from last weekend was the 2000+XP/MSI266 mobo for $140. 1 good stick of 512 DDR over 1 gig of generic, unless you really need the extra memory.

I might be too late oh well....

Looks like you already got the stuff......

Well check your chip. If it's an AGOIA or AROIA with a later pack date than you might have a monster oc chip. It oc's almost as well as the 1.6A P4.

Fry's online store doesn't offer the same deals as on the newspaper (S. California). Today it offers a boxed AXP 1700+ and MSI K7T266 Pro 2A motherboard combo for $99 + tax. Also there is a boxed P4 2.4Gh (533Mhz FSB) and MSI 645e Max (Sis 645DX) motherboard combo for $250 + tax. I would get the Athlon XP 1700+ combo in a heart beat if I need to upgrade computer today.
