SBC/Yahoo DSL

My brother was looking into getting this and his main question was if there were going to be any hidden charges since they throw $29.95/6 months all over the page. I told him aside from the activation fee(waived in this case) I couldn't think of any. It says it comes with a free modem. It's possible to run two computers off of one DSL modem using NIC cards right? I know a lot of you on here have DSL so I thought I would post this question and ask you guys, aside from the monthly charge, what else did you have to pay for in your first month of service? Thanks.

You'll want to get a router if you're planning on splitting the connection.

Just a warning about SBC/Ameritech - their personal web space blows chunks. There is no FTP access available to your web space - only a web interface that you have to use Netscape to upload to.

I've been asking them for two years to please allow FTP access, but this is obviously not a priority for them. Oh well...

The commercials for SBC/Yahoo dsl are starting to really annoy me. I don't like how they're using "We give you your very own customized start page! It shows you your local weather and even stats from your favorite sports teams!" as their main selling point. There are people who will be impressed by this and only sign up with them for that mentioned "feature."

I signed up for the SBC/Ameritech DSL $29.95 deal in July, with the intent of getting rid of my ATTBI cable modem.

Beware of their customer service-- it rots. Or at least it did in August when I had them.

The DSL service was okay enough to convince me to switch to SBC, but then ATTBI cut a deal to keep me as a customer, so I stayed with them.

Check out the SBC forums on www.dslreports.com -- you'll read all kinds of stories, good and bad.

I'm tempted to switch over to SBC DSL but I didn't have good experience last time when I subscribed to DirecTV DSL (SBC line). Plus I don't like the PPPoE idea. I'm pretty happy with my cable modem.

I actually don't have much of a choice, but I don't think I'll have much of a problem for my current needs.

You don't necessarily have to get a router.. If you are short on cash and have 3 total nic cards you can just enable internet connection sharing.. BUT, you'll have to find an older version of their PPPoE connection software (Usually Enternet 300, but has been known to be different) as the newer versions disable Internet Connection Sharing and makes it a bitch to do it that way. I'm sure people have the older version of the software around.

But hell.. if you have the cash, just go buy a router.. makes your computer a little safter from outside predators anyways..

Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet. It's a way to connect to a WAN by simulating a dial-up connection.

BTW - this is much better than the Enternet program Ameritech gives you - http://user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~normanb/

It's a much smaller client - doesn't have all of the crap built into the Enternet software.

"You're soaking in it" is from a TV commercial for Palmolive dish detergent that was popular for many years.

It's another way of my saying "the computer you're using right now can be a router; you just need a NIC and the right software."

I had so many connecting problems (network down) with DirecTV DSL and the speed is not there (less than 1 Mbps download). With TimeWarner, I consistently gets almost 2 Mbps download and 380 Kbps upload.

Most DSL services I've seen have a "standard package" of 768 down/384 up. And even then they don't guarantee those speeds; those are maximums.

I'm pretty happy with my ATTBI speeds: 1408/162 at the moment...
