I have the pioneer slot drive. I have been using it for about 1 year now with no troubles and have watched over 100 movies and used it almost everything else with not one glitch. Good and fast drive.

Cheers,
Scott Murphy

I have the Liteon 16X. I like Liteon stuff. Also the Liteons are 16/48 so they should be faster than the Pioneers. And the Liteons are cheaper. The Liteons are also good at audio exstraction. Mine hits 40-44X when ripping audio. Hope this helps.

I have the Lite-On 16x DVD-ROM and I'm happy with it.

I'm curious -- why did DVD-ROM drive speeds stop at 16X? Logically, I thought they would have increased like CD and CD-RW speeds, but I assume that since there's so much data on a DVD, it can't read it faster than 16X (for now?

16x DVD is like 19 megs per second. Pretty fast if you ask me. I'm sure faster speeds will come out soon enough

Just go with the cheaper one. There really isn't anything out there you'll need the bestest dvd performance. And as it is Lite-ons are very good drives too.

i like the look of the slot loading one better also, but make sure you dont use smaller discs in them because there is a huge chance of it becoming stuck in there

Just my two cents...

I have an older (12x) Pioneer slot load, and I love it! As
far as performance, it's fine, but I just love the slot load! Very
convenient.

I have the Pioneer slot loading one...and I've been very happy with it. It rips music fast and it plays movies just fine.

I don't think this'll stop anything though - the better you idiot-proof a system, the more impressive the idiot becomes.

No complaints with my 16x's lite on DVD for $33. Does everything its supposed to. My next one for my 2nd rig will be another lite on or that slot loader cuz I want to try going trayless.

Yeah, I think when I'm going to upgrade my GF's system, I'll put the Lite On in it, but I really want a slot loader for myself.

If you think about dvd drive speeds, what's the point of going faster? there really isn't any. Who's it going to benefit your dvd's aren't going to play faster. All it really helps are dvd rippers.

I have a 16x pioneer tray load, had it for 1.5 years now, and i'm starting to get get pops in the sound and stuff, i'm thinking the head is dirty, but just wanted to give you some honest input. i have an audigy plat and i'm thinking that is not the problem.

clutchy's right, i'm not a hardware techie but dvd drives only play dvds at 1X anyway. The faster speeds only help with ripping dvds to the hd I believe. Besides I don't think dvd will get any faster because dvds hold so much info. Now dvd drives are as fast as cdroms. The data tracks on dvds have to be very small. How could you read the same amount of data at any faster speeds. my 2 cents worth any way.
