harddrive and win xp question
ok..this is sort of a hardware and software question. i have secondary hard drive in a win xp box that i want to remove. when i remove it, i get the xp stop error on boot, because my hardware configuration has changed.
if i put it back in...everything is fine. without that harddrive xp thinks i've somehow bypassed the security crap and won't boot.. how do i take it out? any ideas? thanks,

Hmmm, do you maybe have the page file on that drive?
Under System Properties, choose the "Advanced" tab and click the "Settings" button under Performance. Then choose the "Advanced" tab in the new window and click the "Change" button toward the bottom. See if there is anything listed for that drive. If there is, click on the drive and then choose "No paging file". If that was your ONLY paging file, you might want to set one up on your primary drive at that time. If that doesn't work, maybe I'll have some other ideas. Check back in with the results. ![]()

no paging file on that drive. i think this has something to do with the security on xp. sort of like if i just put a new proc in, it won't boot. there has to be a way to do it though.

But that wouldn't cause it not to boot, that would just force reactivation. Plus, removing hardware doesn't do it, replacing hardware does.
You must have some driver, or something, on that drive that XP is looking for.

nope...can't be. let me explain why.
we'll call the box that the drive is in now P4. the hard drive came out of another box called zephyrus. zephyrus is my music server. i broke the mobo in zephyrus, and had to order a new one. since all my mp3s are on the drive in zephyrus, i took it out and put it in p4. since then, i've installed no new software, no service packs, nothing. so i don't see how there would be a driver or anyhthing. |

LPmiller is right though, you would not get a STOP error if it was just the windows activation. It thinks SOMETHING is on that drive that it needs.
You could try to do a repair installation after taking out the drive. |

so i did find one thing that was sort of on the drive...xp has this "system restore" utility that was turned on for that drive. turned that off. now, on the drive there is 1 directory. it has 1 file, which is an excel file, and 1 sub directory. every file in the sub directory is an mp3.
still get a stop error if i take it out. i just don't get it. guess i'll try a repair installation next. |

ok, i vote for myself for the darwin awards
.my problem was that i was taking out the wrong drive. i realized it yesterday when i was putting in a new burner. i was actually removing the main drive, so obviously it wouldn't boot. i have a theory on the stop error. the secondary drive, which contained nothing but mp3 files, did have a win xp installation on it. when i moved it, i just deleted the windows directory. but, since i didnt' format the drive, there was still data in the boot sector. so, when i tried to boot after removing the primary drive, it gave the stop error. oh well, at least it's out now and i can rebuild my music server ![]() |
