Nice to see someone **** on it instead of coping out with a "whatever floats yer boat, this card may work for you." Good review.

the card looks cool, but performance is absent
too much for that kind of performance... i would rather get a high end geforce 4 mx then that and save 300 bucks

Agreed. This review told the truth. Matrox is a dumb company that is only going to fall deeper in debt because of this. They felt they could carve their own niche in the market but all they've done is pidgeon hole themselves into oblivion.

Well folks, I cannot tell you how relieved I am to know that some of you actually want to hear the TRUTH about products rather than the rehashed marketing crud that so many reviewers (yeah ok, is that what they are? how about "free hardware wantin' scumbags" instead?) lay so heavily into their reviews.
I also should point out just how sad I was to have to smack the Parhelia so hard. Being a good Canadian boy I was very much looking forward to reviewing this card from my neighbors down the road in Quebec. There is nothing I would have liked more than to hit the Parhelia with a 10/10 and help Matrox move some cards but (and this is one very fat but) my duty is to all of YOU, the got|apex readers, and that duty is something I take VERY seriously. |

"Diogenses would be proud Keep fighting the good fight."
Well, I do not know that I am particularily cynical enough to elicit the pride of a man such as he but, this bit of a descriptive of Diogenes would seem to color he and I as birds of a feather to at least some degree. "...he was more attentive to practical than to theoretical wisdom." At least as far as the way I look at PC technology is concerned. Nonethless, thx for what I see as a compliment. See, told ya I ain't not no cynic! heh heh ![]() Last edited by KillerG : 01-14-2003 at 04:43 AM. |

A good comprehensive review with 6/10 exactly being what this card deserves. Furthermore, the conclusion summarizing the major points was exemplary.
With its niche market was under attack by ATI and Nvidia, Matrox had to deliver something. But what was delivered was too much, too little, and too late. Launched with shaky drivers this underwhelming card still costs too much. And not quite being a gaming card compounded matters when the impressive Radeon 9700 Pro shortly came along to bitchslap the Parhelia bad. One must ask what does this card have to offer with its competitors delivering most of what it offers cheaper and better? The answer: not much. With Matrox's history of the last few years and now this misfire, people rightfully wonder will they be making videocards with its own chips in the future. The likely answer is no. Even Matrox fanboys wouldn't contend the review findings and could only give weak nitpicking. http://forums.matroxusers.com/showth...threadid=39129 |
