Transferring Files from Mac to PC
My sister bought a used Macintosh G3. The guy who sold it to her left 3300 MP3 files on the hard drive. I told her not to delete them until I have a chance to either put them on an external CDRW or external hard drive which I have.
If I transfer them to either device, will my PC computer recognize them? |

Can you network the two computers? That would be the easiest/fastest way to transfer the files.
If you move them onto CD-R, I think you'll have to use iso9660 format. I may be wrong, since I haven't had to do this for several years.

I would go with the CD-RW.

You can transfer the files as-is if you decide to go with something other than the cd-rw. If you have them networked, say with a crossover cable or on a hub, you can IM the from one computer to another as a giant zip file. But if you don't want to or can't network them, a cd-rw is fine.

Now I'm confused. Aren't you burning from the mac? Unless you're running Virtual PC you're going to have a hard time getting CDRWIN to run on it. ![]() Maybe i'm misunderstanding something. |

I was going to load CDRWIN onto her computer and then use my external burner. I don't know that much about the ISO format. Isn't that a universal format?

I don't think they make CDRWIN for the Mac. ![]() If you're only dealing with mp3s, do like verve247 says and use itunes. |

It's very easy to do, as long as you ahve 10.1 or higher. Just put in a blank cd and choose the format from the opening window. Put the files into the cd icon and then move the cd into the trash. it'll start burning immediately.

I found out that itunes is already on her computer. So is that a universal format that I can play on my PC after I burn them to CD's? |

I have a mac at work and a pc at home... and when i get bored at work i get mp3's and burn them through itunes and take them home and put them on my pc. The only real differece is that itunes uses different tags for author, track name, etc... So when you play the mp3's in winamp or whatever, it may say artist = unknown... which is not a big deal... but the file names will transfer fine and you should have a whole lot of music..
oh and someone mentioned zipping mp3 files... that is more or less a waste of time. mp3 is a compressed wav file so to try and compress it more is a slow process with little to no gain in size... I tried this about 5 years ago thinking the same thing but when i zipped 300 mb of mp3's i ended up with a 289 mb zip file... and the process was pretty slow to zip and unzip... just burn them as they are and if you dont have enough cd's then go by a set of cdrw's and rotate, one is burning while one is being pulled clean onto your PC. have a nice weekend... and go Raiders. ![]() Maarchk

Well, I took my Acer USB 1.1 4X CDRW to my sister's house and discovered that it is not compatible with Mac's.
So I looked at different web sites to find which external CDRW drives are compatible with Mac's and PC's. There are a few, including IOMEGA. How about the external hard drive transfer? Will that work? Probably not, since it will be in Mac format...Right? |

Sorry, but a harddrive swap won't work. Are there mac drivers for the acer? Is she fully updated to 10.2? that could affect compatibility.
Another possibility is to hook up the imac to a network and transfer files that way. they can connect to pc networks just fine. |

She or I don't know where to look for drivers on her computer? And I don't think her OS is 10.2, but I am not sure. How about a PC laptop for the network idea? |

Oh, I meant go to the acer website and see if they have drivers to download. I just checked and no they don't. Here's the problem Johnny. 10.2 would probaly give you cd drive support. 10.2 costs $129. 10.2 can also set up networks to pc networks. If the imac is below 10.2 then you need a program called Dave (www.thursby.com)to allow the connection. Alternatives are finding someone with a mac or an ext. harddrive that is mac formatted. Sorry i can't be of anymore help.

Thanks, verve, I think I am just going to buy an IOMEGA CDRW from their website. It's only $68 with a 15% coupon.
