modem?

i need to buy a modem for my new dell i just ordered. i couldnt see spending $30 at dell to get a modem from them i thought i could find one cheaper else ware. are any of these any good. or could you recomend a better one. i heard winmodems where not as good, is this true. and how can i tell if these are win modems or not

Not all modems are the same, you have to look at the capabilities. If we are talking about an internal dial up modem you have to ask yourself what your looking for. Some are just fax/data modems and some are fax/data and voice, if you plan on using it as an answering machine for example it will come in handy. I've used a US robotics that I bought some 6 years ago and it still works great.

If it's just for the internet, then Canta's right -- a modem is a modem.

You may want to invest in a good name, however. I have a modem graveyard of 4 PCI card and 1 ISA (from long long ago), cards that have crapped out. That $9 one would do the job I think, and since you're not investing a ton, you're safe (until the modem monster comes and eats it)
