Mobile Procs vs. Regular Procs.

Hey Yall...

I was interested in buying a dell 1100 model laptop.

I just found out that it has a 2.4GHZ P4 chip.. but it's not an "M" model. I was worrying that the cost is great... although is there any known bugs... or problems w/ mixing a desktop cpu in a laptop? Anyone hear anything? Personal experiences?

Thanks....

Oh yea.. one more thing... IF getting a desktop cpu for my laptop isn't a wise thing.. would getting a celeron CPU in place of it be better? I know I'm sacrificing performance... but at least i'll know that the longevity of the laptop won't be sacrificed.

Why don't you get the new 600M, which comes with the new Centrino chips?

The difference between the M-modeled chips is that they power down when not under the full load, or hooked up to a power outlet.

There is no problem with a Desktop CPU in a laptop if all the precautions are made for (by the manf.) like airflow and such.

I think I have the P4-M in my 2650 laptop! It runs @ 1.2Ghz instead of 1.8Ghz when use with battery and under low load!

600m's are nice.. but a bit too pricey for me.

I'm getting the 1100 for $1099 - $100 rebate...

I'm assuming the batter life on the "M" processors are way better then.

Anyone know about the whole celeron thing yet?

ahhhhhhh.. so hard to decide.... the 1100 has better specs and costs less... the ONLY thing going for the 600M is the mobile CPU and the size.. and the weight...

What would you guys do? Honest opinion..

I just want something portable.. but they both are portable.. haha..

Just what laptops are for... Your basic.. cd burning... doing homework on when I'm not home... plugging in at Starbucks... dvd watching... the usual stuff...

I mean... light IS better... but it's more expensive.. and i literally get less.

Get more than 256 megs of ram. Adding ram later sucks, get buy enough to last now. 512 will suffice.

Is it a pain to just add a DIMM myself?

Just get the cheapest memory you can get and then add more later. Dell's memory prices are insane. On the new Inspiron 8500 it is $3,300 to go from 512MB to 2GB. $3,300!!!!

That is why when I get my Latitude I am only getting 128MB. I checked with Crucial and can get 1GB (2x512) for $260.

To get the same thing form Dell it's $450.

Agreed. Although I wouldn't be happy with even 384.

Get the 1100. A year or so for now, you'll be happy you got the more powerful unit.

Any opinions on the flipside...

Yea Cantacuzene... I'm most likely going to go w/ the 1100 unless someone lets me know there's a huge defect w/ them because they use desktop CPU's.
