CAT5 Line tester
I need a cable tester for a job that i have coming up. Basically I need to repair and install CAT5(E) and RJ-45 cables in an office building. The biggest part of my job will be for setting up an ethernet network so RJ-45 is not a big issue but I'm sure it will help on future jobs. Can anyone reccomend a good full featured tester for me? My budget is around $250 shipped. Thanks in advance for you help.

Do a google search for Ideal LinkMaster Pro. I use one at work all the time to repair and troubleshoot connections. This model can be had for $175, the deluxe version comes with 4 remotes so you can test more than one line without having to go back and forth.
Try this link for a slightly different version: http://www.e-sci.com/jensen/RENDER/1/61/425/4220.html -Eric |

Are you trying to just wire-map test the cables or are you trying to actually certify them for Category 5 or 6? If you want to wire-map test them, then go for Eric_B's suggestion. If you're actually trying to scan and certify them , I'd be looking at a fluke cable tester like these that test NEXT, FEXT, wire map, line length, impulse noise, line propagation delay, return loss, Far end return loss, attenuation, attenuation-to-crosstalk ratio (ACR), FACR, power-sum ACR, power-sum FACR, ELFEXT, FELFEXT, etc.
BTW: You could rent the scanner if you had to.

For a Fluke, I think renting would be his only option on a $200 budget. Flukes usually go for upwards of $10,000.

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't need anything as complicated as a certifier. The Ideal LinkMaster looks like it has most of what I need in it. I think that the LanRoverPro might also be good. I'm always open to more options so keep the suggestions coming.
