Hi all,

I have a wired network set up in my house. It's a Linksys Router BEFSR41. I wanted to add a wireless router to the network. I was wondering if it was possible to just buy a wireless router and then plug it into the wired router. And if that's possible, would it have to be a Linksys wireless router?

All you would need since you have the router already is a wireless access point. If you want to stick with linksys, you can get the WAP54A. It shouldn't matter what brand you get though. I personally like Linksys.

What's the big difference between the G and the A? They have that chart up at Linksys, but it's vagueness doesn't help at all. It might as well say, "This one costs more therefore it's better".

The G Standard is still not Set in stone. personaly i would wait on getting G unitl it is set in stone

802.11a isn't exactly widely used right now. It allows users to transfer files within the network at 54mbps. The main difference between A and G is that A runs on a 5ghz bandwidth and i think most, if not all of the A routers/access points allow dual usage by 5GHz and 2.4GHz users. The G, on the other hand, runs at 2.4ghz and MAY interfere with other 2.4ghz devices like portable phones and things like that. I haven't heard of anyone having serious problems though.

For whatever reason, the A has less of a range than B and G. I think this may have to do with the band it's running on (5ghz).

I would suggest going with B. It's cheap, it works, and unless you're transferring HUGE ASS files between computers on your network, there's no need for anything more expensive. 22mbps is the top transfer rate of B. I am running the linksys 802.11b Access point router with 4-port switch. I am very very happy with its performance thus far and it has a nice range both in my 2 bedroom apartment and my parents 3 bedroom house where I was able to use my laptop 3 floors up from the router itself.

I'd say, if you have a couple of extra bucks, buy the 802.11G router or WAP. I haven't heard the greatest things about the Linksys router that's out now for backwards compatibility, but maybe a firmware update will fix those issues..

Get the wireless router instead of wireless access point. I have the Siemens wireless router (802.11b) with print server so it's pretty nice.
