Got|Hard drive that won't recognize?

So I've hooked up everything to my upgraded machine --

Motherboard IDE
80gb main drive
60gb storage

IDE 1 on Controller Card (PCI)
60gb storage
40gb old main drive with win2000 still on it
IDE 2
80gb storage

the 40gb drive is being a problem child! When I have it hooked up with the IDE, Windows will not start. When I unplug it, Windows starts. But I need to grab stuff off that drive... how might I do this?

You guys have been VERY helpful for me, I'm kinda under the wire, because I'm moving to Virginia on Saturday, and I'd like to have my computer workin!

Do you have the jumpers on the 40GB drive set to be SLAVE rather than MASTER?

Make sure you're not mixing master/slave & cable select. Which setup are you using?

Try putting the 40 on the secondary ide channel.

I have the 40 set on "Cable Select" ... I'm not sure what the other one on the channel is

Guess I'll do that next

Still no worky, it doesn't like to recognize 2 Windows2000 drives when they're both connected, even in my dad's. Windows2000 on the 40gb loads on my dad's PC, so the drive still works. Maybe set all HD's to cable select?

Okay, it took all this time until one of my GIRL friends suggested this: why not set up a LAN? lol, I'm currently transferring the files from my old 40gb (which I stuck in my dad's PC) to my new PC. Works like a charm, even though I only have a hub at 10mbps

Yaaay, the tyranny of this transfer mystery is OVER! I've appreciated all y'alls help.

One more thing -- since Windows won't boot up with my 80gb Win2k drive and the 40gb Win2k drive, once I steal the 40gb back I want to format it and use it for storage. I know you can boot up to DOS, I think, and use FDISK or FORMAT, but where do you get those files for the floppies? I've been told to use the Windows "make boot disk" option but that's never worked for me. I have a boot disk that kicks you to the command prompt "A:>" but there's nothing else like FORMAT or FDISK on the disk. Is there any where I can get a disk like this (downloadable?)?

Why would you want to put DOS on it?

Anyhow.. Go to a machine that is already running DOS (or windows 9x) and at the command prompt, type: SYS A: with a floppy in it. That'll allow you to boot off of it.

now copy FDISK*.* to the floppy and FORMAT*.* to the floppy.

Do what SnotRocket says... and tell that controller card, "Y'Bettuh Recognize!"

And there's always Bootdisk.com
