Keyboard Cleaning?

I remember hearing once that you can pop your keyboard in the dish washer and it cleans it just fine. Of course you have to leave it out until it fully dries. Has anyone tried this?

Why don't you do it and let us know how it goes?

I also heard you can get a great clean by removing ALL of the keys, putting them in a mesh cloth baggy and putting them in the clothes washer..

Try that too while your at it!

It can take quite a while to dry. Inside many there are two films of plastic sandwitched together. Once water gets between them, it doesn't disappear very quickly.

Be very careful if you ever remove any of the wide keys (space, shift, etc.), as they have much more complicated mechanisms (extra bars and such) that keep them level as they are pressed). These keys can be a bear to get back on correctly. If I ever have to remove keys to try to clean out some junk, I only remove the regular keys and work around the wide ones.

Any suggestions for those of us with a wireless keyboard. I have a Logitech cordless freedom that is about 2.5 years old and getting pretty funky down in there.

Take it apart - I did that with mine once when I spilled red wine on it (d'oh!). Just unscrew it & you can lift the whole mechanism out without popping the keys off. Shake out all the crumbs & wipe down the contact sheet (but I wouldn't use any solvents or anything to clean it).

Put it back together, put any leftover parts in your pocket (these are called 'pocket parts', and you can throw them away when no one is looking), and you're all set! Worked great for me on one of those standard Dell keyboards.
