Internet Connections...
Im not sure if this topic goes here but i'll give it a shot.
I was wondering which internet connection is faster. Cable or DSL? many people say Cable is faster than DSL is that true? or does it depend in the area you live in. |

it varies by location, and ISP. Cable usually depends on how many people in your area have it as well. The more people that have it, and the more activity on it, the slower you get. But if you're the only one around, you can get upwards of T1 or faster speeds. For DSL, *most* basic consumer DSL's have significantly higher download speeds than upload. The line is dedicated to you, so it doesn't matter how many people in your neighborhood has it, you'll get the same speed. It is usually capped too.

Which area of So Cal are you living now? It really varies on location and in some places, only ADSL or Cable is available. I used to live off campus (UCLA) and cable isn't a good choice since there are so many students constantly downloading stuffs day and night. I've also heard mix feedback from Irvine area. One of my friends in Newport Beach constantly hits HIGH speed via his cable cuz the area is fairly new and not too many residents have subscribed yet.
You can go to www.dslreports.com. Type in your zip code and read thru the feedbacks. |

The one I'm currently using, though they don't have much of an automated way of checking if you qualify, www.cyberonic.com offers one of the best packages for DSL, if you're within the range. But yeah, like aristo said, I'd check dslreports for user reviews, etc.

Normally, if you're considering cable, your only choice is whoever is your cable TV provider, since they're the only company with a cable line connected to your house. I recently switched from DSL to cable (and the cable connection I have IS faster than the DSL I gave up), but it really depends on your location & the providers. I would try the DSL first personally - I had great luck with my DSL (until SBC bought out Ameritch & the service went into the toilet). |

well i'm in El Monte, Ca. i have read pretty good reports about DSL in this city. I don't know much about cable but most of my friends say cable is better than DSL. maybe it depends how far we live from the server? right now i'm using DSL and i'm pretty satisfied with it. but isn't there a way to get more bandwidth by not paying the extra $$$ |

My cable connection (Road Runner) is faster (both upload and download) than the last DSL connection I used (DirecTV using SBC line).

It will be shared by all the computers you share an internet connection with. If 3 computers are downloading on your connection you will get 1/3rd the bandwidth. |

I have couple friends who live in that area and I think most of them use ADSL. The speed depends on the distance between your house to CO (Central Office), and the quality of your phone lines. When I stayed in my apt which is just right across the CO, I constantly had above 700k for download. Now I move back home and my house is right at the very edge of ADSL service. The most I can get is around 500k for download and the service isn't stable at all though I used Verizon at both places. To get the most out of your internet, download the registries from speedguide according to your OS. |

I forgot to mention. If you are using Verizon ADSL, you can sign a 1-year contract to lower the bill. Also, I heard that if they will lower the price even more sometime in the future if you also use Verizon Wireless.

Not necessarily. That's only if you are both trying to maximize your download/upload speeds. If your brother is not doing anything intensive with the connection, you should be able to utilize the majority of the bandwidth.

I say you kill the cable. I used to have the router in my room controlling access to all the computers in the house. Come time for the curfew, I killed all internet connections. Except mine, of course.

With DSL I used to get about 368 up and down. With cable I get up to 1 meg down and 100 up. YMMV.
