wireless signal strength
does anyone have a utility for measuring wireless signal strength?
I have a D-Link DI-614+ router and a Lucent WaveLAN gold card. I just brought it back to my parents house, while i'm visiting, and the performance is awful. It is quite fast in my apartment. I want to move the router around so that i can get a good signal, and that sort of utility would help for sure. Also, does anyone know of a good site with "tips" (anything useful for beginners) on getting a good signal. Thanks.

For signal strength, just look at the little Icon in the system tray, that will tell you if signal is good, better, best.
For how to set it up, keep it away from microwaves and cordless phones which can interfere with it. Try to have as few walls as possible between the base and teh laptop. Basic stuff...

I actually have had the same problem, excpept I'm using it at school and getting terrible signal versus great reception at home. My problem is that the signal strength doesn't stay consistent and various times, I don't even get assigned an IP.
I've got the Linksys Instant Wireless V. 3. Lemme know if you get any sites with "tips" |

If your card supports it, Network Stumbler will give you the signal strength as well as the signal to noise ratio. That site also has some good info on wireless.
Also check out Seattle Wireless for some good tips & info. |

OMG, you lucky son of a gun you have a lucent wavelan. Alright you are so in luck. There is this program cald Netstumbler, it not only lets you see your signal strength, but those of other access points too. Before anyone else tries this program too, you must have the right type of network card. http://www.stumbler.net/readme/readme_0_3_30.html is the readme file about the program. Here http://www.netstumbler.com/download....&orderby=hitsD just scroll down alittle for the link, i don't really like to hotlink to files, its not nice.
