Thumbs down NVIDIA you dirty little cheats!

"Saratoga, California USA May 23rd, 2003

Dear Member of the Press:

3DMark(R)03 incorporates many ground breaking new features and technologies and sets the standard for easily and objectively measuring and comparing modern PCs' 3D graphics performance. Recently, there have been questions and some confusion regarding 3DMark(R)03 results obtained with certain NVIDIA drivers.

We have now established that NVIDIA's Detonator FX drivers contain certain detection mechanisms that cause an artificially high score when using 3DMark(R)03. We have just published a patch 330 for 3DMark03 that defeats the detection mechanisms in the drivers and provides correct results.

patch:
http://www.futuremark.com/download/?...patch330.shtml

As with all Futuremark's benchmarks, 3DMark(R)03 has been created in cooperation with the major PC industry players to provide users with the best possible and most reliable set of diagnostic tools.

Futuremark is regarded as the driving force that pushes the industry to raise the bar with respect to graphics performance and features. We are committed to deliver performance analysis in an accurate, fair and consistent manner. 3DMark(R)03 continues in that tradition."

Falsely inflating scores and giving Nvidia card owners a false sense of superiority. How low will they go?

YEah, Nvidia cheated and gained 24% while ATI's so called cheat gained them a massive 1.9%. Thats actually within the margin of error.

So why do we care about 3DMark again? Anyone that matters uses real in-game benchmarks. (UT2003 is my favorite)

Yeah, the HArdocp UT2003 benchmark is the best test out there for a pc right now. I'd like to get my hands on that Doom3 benchmark all the tech sites got. Seems like that would be a reall stress test.

I'd like to get the Aquamark 2.0 benchmark-supposed to bring current video cards to their knees.

Since the benchmarks were on their website saying their cards were "so good", I am just waiting until some idiot is going to TRY and sue for false advertising.

I still believe minesweeper is one of the most effective benchmarks out there

In fact, ATI appears to have also been altering its software drivers to improve its test scores, Futuremark said. The new benchmark reduced the performance of a system with ATI's Catalyst 3.4 driver and the Radeon 9800 Pro by almost 2 percent. This was due to a drop in performance of some 8 percent for one particular part of the test, suggesting that ATI's drivers also had been making adjustments to produce better results. 3DMark03's margin of error was 3 percent.

Yet more proof that NVIDIA is better than ATI. ATI can't even cheat as well as NVIDIA can.

3dMark is a useless tool for people to brag about their scores. Real world application benchmarks are much better. UT2003 is very good for now, this fall Half Life 2 will become the new benchmark and then Doom III.

Or It just means that nVidia can cheat better.

If a student cheats and scores better on a test than everyone does that mean that the student is better academically? Let's go with....no. It just means that student is a dirty cheat. Just like nVidia.

I don't think this'll stop anything though - the better you idiot-proof a system, the more impressive the idiot becomes.

I recently downloaded the latest drivers from ATI for my 9700 (not pro) and my score on Futuremark 2003 went up 300 points (about 7 1/2%). I just use it to see how mu computer is running. I am still using the same test i downloaded. No memory or hardware changes. Is it because they are cheating or is it because the drivers are better?

It could be that particular driver was optimized better for 3dmark. That doesn't mean the driver is as good for games as a previous driver is. After all 3dmark increase != game increase
