Primary Hard Drive

So my primary hard drive crashed. It started clicking and then beeping (click click beep, click click beep), but it actually booted into the OS. Whenever it tries to access the drive it clicks and beeps. I checked the model and it's a DeathStar, so I need a new primary drive.

There are deals at BB and compusa that have some 120GB or 160Gb for about $100. Is using such high capacity drives for your primary drive a good idea?

I was raised on having a smaller, fast drive for the OS drive. But I recently upped my main drive to an 80GB 7200rpm 8MB Maxtor, and while I may partition about 55GB of it later, I haven't really touched any of the space. However, I have 360GB on storage, so main drive space really isn't much of an issue

If you're not a crazed storage nut like me, I think moving to a higher capacity, 8MB ATA or 10000rpm SATA (if your mobo takes it) are good options. People with the 36.9GB 10k SATA drive say that it only takes WinXP 30 sec or less from power on to load

I wish I could get a SATA interface, but I would need a new mobo.

The ones at compusa say it runs 20% faster than ordinary 7200RPM drives. It also has 8mb so that's good in a way.

I already have about 800 Gigs over two computers, so this will push me to a terabyte of space...

There are couples of HD deals this week @ local OM, CompUSA, and BB stores. Check either the Deal page or forum for more info ($99.99 for Maxtor 160GB or $79.99 for WD 120GB - both with 8MB buffer).
I have no problem with big HDs in my computers whatsoever (160GB drive in my Dell and 120GB drive in my Athlon box). My Athlon box also have one 80GB and one 40GB. I was about the RAID0 my Dell box with two 120GB (8MB) but I got lazy so I returned the drive.

Yup, I'm looking at the compusa deal since the bb near me is out of their hard drive and there aren't any OM nearby.

I say go for the 160+ GB drive... most likely those are also running ATA 133 as well, but just partition off a section of it for your O/S.

How big should the partition for the OS be? I used to think 2.5 gigs was enough for Windows XP, but apparently it's not. Also, where do you guys put your virtual memory? On the same partition as the OS?

Well, I store all my programs on a seperate hard drive/partition, so this is just the OS and virtual memory.

I stopped doing this also thus my O/S partition is 20GB (both computers).
