I find my P2-366 based Compaq Armada is adequate for just about everything except games. It's a little iffy on full-screen video, but there are PC Cards (zoomed video) that are supposed to help with that. The hard drive is slow, but it's no slower than what I see in newer laptops (4500RPM). It's got a nice big 14" LCD, but the 1024x768 resolution is just a little cramped. And it doesn't have a DVD drive (I've been keeping an eye on EBay to correct this).
With a brand new laptop you probably won't have to deal with most of these issues. Keep an eye on what video chipset it uses (I don't know what's hot right now). One of the new Centrino (or just Pentium M) laptops would be really nice, but you could save some money by getting a P4 or Athlon and probably still be perfectly happy. You might want to figure accessories into your budget, too, like a bag for the laptop, external drives, extra batteries, etc. |

Boy, tough choice! I'd probably go for 15" because they (the ones I looked at, anyway) can do better than 1280x1024, but the 1600x1200 resolution of the 16-inchers is tempting. Of course, the bigger the screen, the more laptop you have to haul around (and it probably drains the battery quicker, too).

Make sure you can read the LCD at its native resolution. If that is too small for you, get a laptop with an LCD with a lower native resolution. LCD's look fuzzy if you run them out of their native resolution (unless you go to like half or something) Some will argue about this, but, quite frankly, they are wrong. The "best" LCD is the one that you are comfortable with.

Don't forget the Powerbook. If you are into multimedia, you can't beat it. Otherwise I would go for the Dell.
