Question Buying a digital camera- advice...?

I am looking to buy a digital camera, somewhere around the $500 mark perhaps. Does anyone have any advice to offer, personal experience, or anything as to which one I should go with?

Thanks!

are you looking for something that is small and portable (Canon Elph) or are you looking for something relatively big that won't fit in your pocket comfortably (Canon G2/G3)

you didn't really give us much to work with.

For me, personally I really like the elph series. So going with your price range, I think that you should go with the cannon S400 That is a pretty kick arse digicam. I think that pretty much cannon uses compact flash for the storage. Which I really like becuase a lot of other devices uses compact flash. Another good camera that I really like is olympus. I've heard great reviews on those digicams. But I really like the cannons the best!

I play favorites with the Pentax Optio S. I've had both an Elph and Optio S and the Optio is considerable thinner than the Elph, so you can actually put it in your pocket and not have a buldge sticking out (and people asking you if you're just happy to see them)

DP Review

I paid around $400 for it at OneCall, found it on the Deals page. I carry this thing EVERYWHERE, so I never miss a moment. All I expected from it was good looking 3MP pics, but I've found the video with audio feature a good touch for capturing funny moments. I do carry it in an altoids container, so I've been able to get into concerts just fine and snap mighty fine pictures.

Got front row, center spots at a Lifehouse concert. Who cares if you like them or not, it's better quality than a Kodak Funsaver disposable! (Plus having video and audio captions for each picture was good )

I have the Olympus c-2100 with extra zoom, a manuel-style camera that unfortunately looses the smallness catagory against the elphs, but has the highest zoom of most cameras (maybe all) that are priced below $500. The camera a year ago was $450. I've really enjoyed it.

I too recommend checking out DPchallenge for a good comparison on cameras.

If you did need something pocket sized, I'm reading the Wal-Mart flyer for this week, and it has the Pentax Optio S for $397, and the sweet part that I didn't get (grr) is a bonus 128MB SD card, which runs about $50 on sale some places. Where's my extra 128MB card! My Dell Axim has to share the one I have with my camera
