I upgraded last november, so not for me. All my friends who need upgrades I'm advising to do now.

You know im looking at the 865/p4c ht combo right now. Specifically that Albatron 865/ P4 2.4c for $300 at Frys. Got 2 sticks of SS 400ddr for my 1.8a that would run perfectly in the dual channel mobo. Should be able to clear 3.2 with that set up. Hopefully 3.5+ghz!

I do anticipate some big price drops due to the fact that people dont need to upgrade many current systems and the new AMD chips.
As always it will probably be cheaper a month later.

or maybe I'll just put a dvd system in the truck...........

Arrow summer doldrums

Yeah now is good time. Nothing really major is going to happen until Athlon 64, P4 Prescott, NV40 are launched end of year.

I'm in the process of upgrading now. I just got a new MSI 865PE Neo2-FIS2R, and I'll be adding a CPU and RAM in the next couple of weeks.

From what I've read, there is still a lot of overcapacity in the hardware side of the computer industry. Plus this is the time which computer sellers try to market their wares to new college students.

When you look at the prices of 52X CDRW's selling for $20 after rebate, 120 GB hard drives for $80 and 512 MB of decent memory for under $50, things must really be hurtin'.

So I expect even further price drops.

I'd definitely advise you to get a mobo with SATA. If you read the reviews over at NewEgg, customers who bought the 36.9GB 10,000 RPM SATA drive (I think by Seagate) are saying it's much faster than SCSI, and that Windows loads up in no time compared to 7200 RPM 8MB ATA drives. Wasn't long ago that 5400 RPM 2MB was fast

supposedly the 2.6 oc's pretty well...not sure bout the 3

CF,
I have to look for the AT review on that raptor HD, but I don't think it was worth the price of admission. I could be wrong but its worth checkin on before buying.

Its worth the price...only thing that could possibly keep me away is the fact its a first gen drive, I tend to buy things after they've been through a first gen "testing". But the desktop benchmark scores on that drive are great. A bit pricy at 115 for 36gigs, but worth it IMHO.

Raw affordable speed :p 15k.3 holds the record for raw speed. the raptor is optimized for desktop use. SCSI voodoocrap isn't too bad once you familiarize yourself with it As for feeling faster, nothing can beat the raw smoothness that comes with a dually system

I've been waiting to upgrade for a few months now. I've now gathered up all the stuff, and I'm actually in the middle of purchasing most of it. I was wondering if the 3.0C would drop anymore. Since i've been looking it's dropped about 80 bucks I plan on getting that with Asus P4C800 Deluxe i875P. I do need it now, but i'm afraid of buyers remorse and see it next week for 300.

I got a 2.3/2.7 P4 hooked up to a KVM and two monitors. This setup runs pretty smooth and I can game and watch movies and stuff at the same time. Multitasks like a mofo!

Cf, re read my 1st post. 2.4 baby!

Att,
Wanna buy my 1.6a @ 2.3ghz combo?

"I was wondering if the 3.0C would drop anymore." Not for the near future. Intel just cut P4 prices on May 11th. The Pentium 4 3.2GHz CPU will come out {~$637 } before another price drop occurs.

2.3 P4 AND a 2.7P4? wow, i only have a (partially built) dual 2.4xeon system and a puny 2100+ on a kvm :p I'm an obsessive multitasker, and responsivness is noticeably better on the dually (not to mention its just plain cool to see 4 graphs on the task manager )
