I took the test over 3 years ago and it wasn't hard. Read through Michael Meyers A+ Book to brush up beforehand.

i am sure there are some "cramp disks" out there that cover most (if not all!!) of the questions you will face on the actual exams !!

So would this A+ certification be useful for getting a computer installation job at Best Buy, Staples, etc. or a tech support job with a compy company? From looking at the sample questions on the Braindump Central website, it's easy stuff at first glance (out of disk space, what should you do, keyboard not working, where is the power connector).

I think it would overqualify you to get such a position at those places.

The A+ cert was actually created by a coalition of companies including CompUsa among others. CompUsa requires the cert to work on repairs for them.

The test is total crap. Computer preschool should allow you to pass it. Very few *real* IT departments will give a crap if you have it or not. Go take an MCSE test instead.. More challenging and somewhat more respected.

A+ is quite useless if you already have a hardware-tech job. But if you are fresh to the market who wants to install/fix computer, A+ may give you the edge over other candidates. Afterall, it is a certificate. The test itself is very easy and I got mine when graduating from high school without going to those expansive prep courses.

This is very true. However, some HR departments that deal with hiring and firing of IT employees, do give a crap. HR departments tend to like credentials... especially those credentals that are acronyms (BS, BA, MCSE, CCNA, etc...). That would include A+, regardless of how much taking it and passing it will really help you in your day-to-day.

To put it another way, it can only help (not hurt, aside from the $$$ it costs to pass it) to take it and pass it.

Dave.

MCSE is indeed vendor specific, but I can't think of ONE company that has computers that isn't running something produced by that vendor. Yes, I think NET+ would be a better test, since not every monkey out there knows even the basics of networking.

If you guys are thinking of taking certification exams to get a foot in the door in the IT industry, don't. Instead, get an intership in the field. If you're going to school full time, your school probably has a placement dept. that can help you get into some company.

I can tell you that prior experience in the field is going to hold a LOT more weight than a certification exam.

A+ may be useful to get your foot in the door at CompUSA, but if you seriously want to make a career out of IT then the certs (especially MCSE and CCNA) will mean much more & you'll get more out of them after you've been in the field for a couple of years. Plus at that time, your employer will probably pay for them & give you a bonus for completing them.
