HTPC questions?

Hey for you guys out there that have built a HTPC. What route would you go? Buy a system from Dell or the like or build from scratch? Why I ask is I plan on getting a new PC and I have my old one. I was also planning on a new HDTV or projector. Thanks

No, it's not THC. It's an acronym for Home Theater PC.

OK

Thanks for the info chosenfool. What do you need and what don't you need as far as hardware and software? All I want the HTPC for is to play moives and music, either to a projector or HDTV. What all do you guiys recommend as far a parts and programs? Thanks

what's the difference between 6.4 and 9.0? is it playing avi files of different codecs or something?

Thanks again chosefool, lots of great info. One more thing do you use a regular TV or an HDTV or what? I was looking at getting a widescreen HDTV, could I use it as an all around screen to do everything on, ie surf the net watch movies, word process???? If you do use a regular TV are you running a dual montitor type set up? Thanks again.
