Question Bad Floppy!! Need Help

My floppy drive light is always on, and when I put in a floppy it doesn't detect it. Any ideas?

if you have recently installed the drive or removed the drive or moved any of the cables in your pc then the problem is you have the ribbon cable to your floppy drive cable on reverced. disconect the cable from the floppy drive and connect it back exactly opposit of how you have it connected now.

When did the 5 1/4" floppy die out into the 3 1/2" era? Even though there's no new and improved floppy (guess it's the CD-R/W), shouldn't these things be dying soon? Please can they!

actually...I think that the usb jump drives are "supposed" to be the thing to null out the 3.5's

I still need to use it when I freshly install OS with PCI RAID/IDE card.

Flipping the ribbon cable doesn't always fix it.. I had a drive that was doing the same thing.. then I flipped the cable over... no change.. the drive was dead.. So if it still doesn't work when you flip the cable, then try changinge the cable.. if it still doesn't work, try another drive.. if that STILL doesn't work, it has to do with your mobo...

If it just happened out of the blue, then yeah... the drive is probably dead.

Isn't it almost impossible to put the cable in backwards now? Well....unless you're using an older cable....

I don't think this'll stop anything though - the better you idiot-proof a system, the more impressive the idiot becomes.

Most O/S' and BIOS' these days recognize multiple types of boot hardware. The floppy can be phased out now that machines recognize USB devices as bootable etc... My 4 year old Sonly Picturebook has a USB floppy that it can boot off of. If it can boot off of that, it should be able to boot off of any other USB device as well. (in theory).

I assume you don't even use it to boot up. You prolly just use it when windows prompts for alternative mass storage drivers right?

I've finally gotten around to flipping around the cable and now my computer won't start up. It is asking me to "reboot and select proper boot device". It has been so long since I had to do that I forgot how. I was just in the bios and looked at the IDE and it is not detecting the master or slave, the only things that are detected are my DVD rom and my Zip. Now what do I do????

That sucks. It is the new cable that came with my mobo. Oh well... So if I flip the cable back to upside down my computer will at least work till I get around to changing out the cable?

Baggio, don't take this question wrong, but you are flipping the cable around on the drive, and not on the motherboard, right?

Yes I flipped the cable around on the actual drive itself.
