Cd mixes... legal?

My friend was wondering the legality of making audio mixes on CD... he says that he thinks it is ok on cassettes but he wasnt too sure about digital music. Does anyone know?

I believe that if it is for "personal" use, then its all legal. Now if you plan to reproduce en masse or distribute, you would need permission.

i think you can make mixed cds for your own personal use if you own all the cds you took the music from. but if you borrow cds to get the tracks, or download the music (like most people in the world) then that is where it becomes illegal. or like speedracer said - its also illegal if you distribute or sell the cds you make.

I heard the same things as CIN but also that there's a form of trial period like maybe a day during which you can listen to music you don't already own, past which you must delete/destroy it or buy it.

if i am not mistaken, there is a 24 hour window available for screening purposes. if you do not own the music and copy it (or obtain a copied or ripped version of it), legally you are allowed to use it for a 24 hour period. or am i mistaken? if this window is correct, how can groups sue end users, napster and the like for copyright infringement? maybe i am wrong in my assumption.

As long as you own the legal copies of the songs, then you can pretty much do whatever you want. You can put them on cassettes, mix them on CD, put them in MP3 players, whatever. The same goes for videos and softwares. As long as you own it (legally of course) you can do anything you want to it, except in cases where you are doing it for economic purposes.

Sorry Coleslaw, but that 24 hour trial period is a farce. If you have an un-payed for copy of music on your computer, it's theft.

Actaully, in the NY Times, a few lawyers said that mp3s are legal for personal use. However, another bunch oppossed them.

What about programs that will convert *.mpg to *.wav files? I am very new to Napstar and have heard of programs that will do this.

MP3s are legal, MP3 is only the compression technology. Think of MP3 as VHS or Beta, you can have legitimate copies of movies in VHS format or you can have a bootlegged copy but still in the same VHS or Beta format.

uhhh... did make it clearer or did I confuse people more?....
