Talking new laptop

well, it's not quite new. it's actually a factory refurb.

compaq evo N610c:

14.1" XGA, 1.8G P-4m, 30GB HD, 512MB ram, DVD/CD-RW

it's thin (just over an inch thick) and light (around 4.8 pounds):

oh, and it only cost $950 shipped.

I got in the x1000 deal that's been around for a couple weeks. In the end it cost me $1350 or so after coupons, rebates, and discounts. I really like it

btw I was eating breakfast and I almost spewed out chicken pot pie on my laptop after reading topane's post.

I'm about this close ===> <=== to buying a laptop, and I've been looking at the Dells and the X1000 series. The only thing that makes me a little leery of buying the Compaq/Centrino is the low processor clock speed. In these days of 3.06GHz processors in the Dell 8500 series laptops, isn't 1.3 or 1.4 GHz a huge set back? Or does the Centrino offer something that the faster processors don't? (Besides built-in wifi and longer battery life)

The things I want/need in a laptop are: 512MB memory, 64MB video (either ATI or GeForce, one of the reasons the X1000 is appealing is the Radeon 9200), CD/RW/DVD Combo drive, and at least WXGA screen. Other than that, size/weight is not a huge factor (but every little bit helps...) and reliability is VERY important (one of the reasons I was going to go with Dell was that I was going to get the CompleteCare warranty for 2 years). My major concern with regard to warrantee is the fact that I live in Hawaii--Shipping a laptop back and forth for work could get expensive.

I'm looking to get something for light gaming, watching movies, web surfing, etc.--basic desktop functions. I'd like to keep the total cost under $1500 AR, possibly with an extra battery as well.

Additionally, when I custom-configure a X-1000 system on Costco.com, I end up with the following system:

Selected Features:
INTEL PENTIUM-M 1.3GHz
512MB DDR SDRAM(2X256MB)
40G 4200RPM HDD
DVD/CDRW Combo Drive
64MB ATI Mobility Radeon 9200
802.11b WiFi Wireless Lan
15.4" WXGA (1280 x 800)
XP Home Operating System
Microsoft Works,Money,Encarta
8 Cell Lithium Ion battery

Included Features:
1-year limited H/W warranty
90-day S/W warranty
IEEE 1394(Firewire)
3 USB 2.0 ports
FIR(Infrared port)
Universal A/C Slimline Adapter
S-video TV-out port
Integrated SD/MMC digital media slot
Touch pad with on/off and dedicated scroll up/down surface
Built-in stereo speakers
Type I/II PCMCIA slot

I can upgrade the processor to 1.4 GHz (+$50) or 1.5 (+$150) but that seems like pretty small increases for the money...
The total for this configuration is 1348.85 shipped, before the $100 MIR...bringing the total down to $1248.85 shipped after MIR.

What to do...What to do? TIA

jon, check out this thread:
http://www.gotapex.com/forums/showth...threadid=63782 (which laptop should I get? (aka is Centrino worth the $$?))

it doesn't answer your questions directly, but there is some discussion of the centrino processor and how centrino speeds compare to regular pentium chips
