DVD burner/ media question

OK- I am finally getting around to trying the DVD burner on my system. I have a trial version of X-Copy to back up some programs. I bought some Maxell discs but my drive doesn't seem to recognize them. On my first trial, It read the original fine and it asked me to insert the DVD+R blank media- then ... nothing. The drive spun a bit as it tried to read, but came up with nothing. No message about the wrong media or anything. I had a sample +RW disc that came with the drive which I had previously formatted and it worked fine. Do the +r discs need formatted to be used? Won't XCopy do that? Or are they (the discs) just incompatible? I have had no problems with CDs. I tried all ten discs I have. My burner is 2.4x and the discs say they are too. It could get expensive to try to find ones that will work. I can't find anything on the drive manufacturer's site (Ikebana) about recommendations for media. It doesn't have its own drivers.

If he's got the trial version of DVDXCopy Xpress, it doesn't provide an option to change burn speed. What brand of DVD burner does Windows recognize your drive as? Most of the Ikebana drives out now are rebadged NEC 1100A which is what I have. Maybe I just got lucky, but I've had no media compatibility issues so far *knocks on wood* but I've used mainly Phillips and Memorex DVD+R media. The majority of issues with DVDXC seem to be media related (finding what works best for your burner) and issues/conflicts with other software (such as EZCD Creator and CDex). The best place I've found for troubleshooting DVDXC issues is the forum at http://dvdxcopy.afterdawn.com. Another thing that can make the burners act up is if they are not on the secondary IDE channel, set as Master. Hope you can work it out--I have backed up about 40 DVD's so far and I am happy with the software.

WIndows says that it is a Ridata drive, but I can't find anything about them making drives- only media. I think it may be a Ricoh. These guys http://www.dvdrw.com/productupgradep...pgrade_faq.htm say that 2.4x drives will need a firmware upgrade to handle 4x media, which is probably all that will be made in the future, but that it needs to be specific to the drive, or it may make it inopperable, so I don't want to just try someone's firmware. The drive did not come with any drivers and lists no firmware or compatable media on their site. This is 2.4x, so it shouldn't be a problem- in theory. I e-mailed them (Ikebana) today- hopefully they will be able to help. I was going to try some other discs, but singles or small packages are hard to find. I don't want to spend $50 on something that isn't going to work. No problems so far with CDs. When I put in the Maxells, it acts like there is nothing there at all.

you might want to call your dvd-rw drive manufacturer to ask them too ... if it's convenient (toll free, or local call). emails might take a while depending on the company (some seem to take a LONG time)

another thing you can do is look at your dvd-rw drive (so take it out of your computer and read everything on it.

i bought that maddog dvd-rom from office max, i open it up, and says NOTHING of maddog on it, i searched the internet and it's an artec drive in a maddog box (luckily, it doesn't have that lame maddog logo on the drive tray). so what i'm getting at is MAYBE model numbers on the drive itself will help you identify the make.

other things you could do is search the internet for "who makes (model#) drive" or something, maybe other forums will have answers

The drive is made by Ritek- July 2002 in Taiwan. I still can't fine anything about Ritek drives- only media. Perhaps they just sell them under other names. Some Ritek media should work though.

Hey djrdam, thanks for the link! May be something useful there- I'll have to check it out further. It seems to be a rather obscure drive. I am starting to consider getting a newer one that will have more compatability- but I'll see whiat I can do with this one first.
