Yes you need a router. Then she needs a network card either wired or wireless depending on whether you get a wired or wireless router. She can use the phone line if she still wants dial up and she has a dial up provider. To share the DSL, the modems you use for dialup aren't going to work. Newer computers might come with a LAN connection or you can go get a PCI network card for under 20 bucks. Wired routers are under 50 bucks.

Correct. You need all that if you don't have it already. I got my Cable modem for free when I signed up for Comcast through Best Buy. The router I got for like 30 after MIR and it has 4 network ports so I can connect up to 4 computers to share files and the Internet. My Dell computer has a built in network/LAN port. You might have to make or buy a network cable to connect your housemates computer to the router...or you can go wireless which I have no experience in doing and no money.

i am planning to go wireless....

this brings me to another question.... if she already had a dsl modem, do we still the router ?? i mean can she just plug her computer into the dsl modem and the phone jack and just dial out ??

Well if she already has a DSL modem that's one less thing to buy but you still need a router if more than one computer is going to access the internet. You can connect the DSL modem directly to a PC with a network card or LAN connection without a router. You can also hook it up to the regular phone jack and dial out to a 56K ISP which is not the same as the DSL ISP. So I guess that setup would be a DSL connection and a backup dialup connection. Still only the computer connected to the DSL modem would have internet access.

If you plan to go wireless then you would need a wireless router connected to the DSL modem. I think they go for like 70 bucks for 802.11b version and over 100 bucks for the "g" version. Right now the "b" version is enough in my opinion.

Hmmm...I know there was an article on this but I can find it going through the G|A new archives.

I got my Netgear 802.11b router from Amazon for $30 after rebate. You can't really go wrong with that. Or you can spend a little more on 802.11g but Netgear hasn't had the wireless card for desktop yet. Perhaps Linksys does?

I've seen the wireless that linksys has for the desktop. I just saw the box tho. I saw two kinds of wireless. They have one that is actually a pci card that has a antenna hooked on to it. and I saw another linksys version where it's basically a pcmcia slot that you put in a pci, and you buy a pcmcia wireless card and put it in there.

I use Dlink products and I haven't had a problem with them however the ppl here seem heavily against D-Link. I would go with whatever they recommend since I seem to be the lucky few who use D-Link and gotten away problem free.

BHA...d-link is the bane of my existance! I truely don't like them! I mean, I would even go with belkin or targus products over theirs! D-link products overheat often, and crash like none other! The drivers sucks, and cust support sucks even more! If anything, trust linksys or netgear. They both are great networking co. but this is all in my opinion!

Netgear too since it's cheaper than Linksys. But you can't really go wrong with either one of them.

for me personally, I like linksys! But like I said again, netgear and linksys are the same in my book. If you gave me a choice on what brand to buy I would choose linksys. But I'll go the other way if the price is right. the reason I choose linksys, is pretty much how they the stuff looks...I think it looks "better", but thats only a opinion. But I would gladly go netgear again, if the price is right. That, and becuase DF uses it...and I don't wanna be like him I'm too good for that j/k
