DVD-drive maker CenDyne has shut down

DVD-drive maker CenDyne has shut down, as a California court decides what to do with the company's assets.
Earlier this month, Santa Ana-based CenDyne was ordered by the Superior Court of California to shut down. The company has been placed into receivership, according to its voice mail message. CenDyne is no longer shipping products and is not servicing warranties or honoring rebates.

Company representatives did not return calls for comment.

Bummer.. I've bought a couple of CenDyne drives, one a rebadged Pioneer DVR-105 and one a rebadged Lite-On 48x burner. Luckily I already got my rebates processed on both of those! Warranty is gone now, though..

I figured this would be relevant since a lot of people here probably got in on a CenDyne deal at one time or another.

I bought a Cendyne 16X DVD-ROM couples of months ago and I don't know if the rebate came thru or not. Fry's rebates don't come with a phone number so I could call anymore.

I just got a 52x burner a couple of months ago. Luckily the rebate is in, but losing the warranty could suck.

WHOA!!BoyHowdy!! Sure glad I didn't jump on the Staples or OfficeMax deals the last two weeks: Though I bet their drives will be even cheaper now. Might be worth the risk of no warranty if the drives sell cheap withOUT some rebate trickery. Thanks for the heads-up!

Don't worry too much about warranties from the standpoint that these are the cheapest components you can buy. If it were a 200 GB hard drive, I'd really be worried! If it breaks in 6 months, DVD+-RW's will be below $100 guaranteed, and a CD-RW will still be cheap.

By the time your hardware dies:
1. It won't be worth crap
2. You would probably want to replace it with something better anyway
