scanning slides?

my mum has hundreds of slides from the days of the projector slide show. she gave them to me, and wants me to figure out a way to convert them to a digital format. any suggestions? I've been doing some research on scanners, as well as services, but i wanted to see if any of you have some experience in this. all i've figured out so far -- this is going to be a very expensive and time-consuming project! Thanks!

I've heard good things about the Epson Perfection 3200 photo scanner. Amazon has it for ~$360.

A scanning service is nice for lazy people. . . but depending on how many slides you have, it may be more cost effective to get the scanner and do it yourself.

somewhere like kinkos should do it, but pretty pricey since they all charger per slide. . .
