I've got the same laptop--love it. Great performance, only thing I would upgrade, if possible, would have been the video card. Radeon 9200 is good, but a 128MB 9600 would have been awesome! Widescreen is the ONLY way to watch movies on a laptop!

that laptop looks nice... but you guys know of anything smaller?
edit: actually, how portable would you say the X1000 feels? is it pretty easy to lug around? does it feel awkward in the backpack / case? Last edited by revil : 10-06-2003 at 02:28 AM. |

I haven't seen any widescreen laptops with screens smaller than 15.4"--the X1000 (and the Dell, which uses the same screen as far as I know) is about as small as it can be, given the size of the screen (the frame around the screen is pretty narrow). If you want to see BIG, check out the 17" Apple or Sager NP4760 or Toshiba Satellite P25-S507--that thing is freaking HUGE! While the X1000/NX7000 is wide, it is nice and thin (just over 1"), and reasonably light for a laptop with a screen this sweet.

The Fujitsu P5010 is a widescreen 10.6" (1280x768) unit. Built in DVD/CD-RW combo, 3lb ultraportable laptop.

Hoo boy, I'm not sure if I'm ready for car mfr's to design laptops. I can just see the spoilers & 'VTEC' stickers all over the Honda machines... |

the x1000 is around 6.5 lbs, the build quality is great. It still is quite a chore to lug around because I have a laptop sleeve that I just sling over my shoulder and after walking for a while it feels heavy. Compared to the inspiron 8500, I'd have to say that the x1000 or the nx7000 is more portable.
The laptop best buy carries designed my porsche is the VPR Matrix line, they seem to be decent from what I've read. CynJon, is it possible to upgrade the video card? I too am running a 9200 mobility and it'd be real nice if I can stick in a 9600... I've heard the radeon mobilities were made such that it can be upgraded. |

This is a major topic of discussion at X1000 Forums. The X1000 supports "FlexFit", which is supposed to be a standard interface for video cards, and supposedly the 9600 will physically FIT in the laptop. The problem is, first of all, getting your hands on a 9600--even the 9200 runs about $260 from Compaq/HP. The other problem, although less severe, is that there would be no official support of the 9600 in the X1000, including drivers. Of course, many people are using modded catalyst drivers with great success, so I'm sure a suitable driver would be forthcoming. I'm still waiting for someone to get their hands on one and make it work. I would definitely consider upgrading if it becomes available, and is not TOO expensive. |

Well actually they are more than just a car manufacturer these days. They design a lot of things. I've seen desklamps designed by porsche, external hard drives from LaCie, and hell half the line of samsung lcd displays are designed by porsche. I think its not that they are designing the actual electronics, but the exterior decor. |

No eagle eyes here, just a reminder every time I fire the laptop up that my eyes need testing and my glasses prescription needs updating. Getting old sucks. (Does that comment belong in S/NSS? )Even set on Windows Standard (Large), the resolution has taken some getting used to. It lives in the docking station most of the time at 1280x1024 through a Dell 1800FP monitor. This combo works very well in the office. Last edited by mechmike0034 : 10-07-2003 at 07:26 AM. |
