Maxtor Died

Sure did. Up and died on me one day before I was going to order my new SATA drive. Guess this eliminates Maxtor from my SATA choices.

Maxtor reliability has gone down. Both of my Maxtor 160GB HDs make lots of noise comparing to my older WD 120GB HD.

One of my Maxtors, the 160gb 8 meg buffer one, runs great and is very quiet and speedy...on the other hand, though, my 80 gig maxtor decided to stop running in DMA mode after a year, conveniently right after the waranty ran up.

I've had good luck with my 3 Maxtors. The two 80gb 8mb cache and 120gb 2mb cache (used for backup) run fine and don't get too hot.

Actually in some cases this could be Microsoft's fault, if you happened to be running Windows at the time. Every so often, Windows will decide for you that your drive shouldn't be running in DMA mode. Even if you try to change the setting in the Device Manager, it won't change. The only way to fix it is to remove the IDE channel from the device manager and let Windows redetect it.

It's a feature, I guess.

yeah, that's what maxtor told me...they said that after a certain amount of errors are detected windows will automatically switch it to PIO mode...but I have uninstalled and reinstalled all the IDE port drivers numerous times, even tried using an ATA-133 pci card, without any luck.
