Compaq ARMADA HELP!!!!!

Hi everyone--I have a hardware question:

I have a Compaq Armada 1700 laptop with a Pentium II processor and a 7 gig hard drive. I upgraded the RAM from 128 to 256. Recently, the hard drive failed. Does it pay for me to replace the hard drive ($150 for a 20gig drive + $50 installation) or does it pay to save up some more money and just get a new laptop. How much money would I have to spend to get a decent laptop--and which ones do ya'll reccomend, if that's the route I should go.

It fits a standard 2.5" 12.5mm thick hard drive, and they're really easy to install.
