best cooling option for new 2600+ cpu

i ordered a retail box AMD 2600+, it comes with a heatsink and fan, what i'm wondering is...should i use the termal pad that comes with it, or use like that artic silver thermal compound instead. My buddy says to just scrap off the pad on the heat sink and replace it with compound. I don't plan on playing with my cpu at all, so i want the best cooling option for longterm placemant...thanx

Most of the places I have read recommend scraping off the thermal pad (with something such as a credit card so you don't scratch the heatsink), cleaning with alcohol, than using a good quality paste (such as arctic silver).

If you don't O/C the CPU, the stock HSF works fine.

But he's asking about the TIM (thermal interface material) vs. heatsink compound.

Well, at least they'll get to clinch at home now, with Prior pitching. The bad part is that Prior won't be ready to start the first game of the Series.

If he's not O/cing, why bother to remove the stock thermal pad? The warranty will be voided. If he wants to O/C, get an aftermarket HSF along with thermal paste.

Leave it stock. You'll be fine.

scratching off the stock compound is a b|tch and a half! if you do decide to remove it and put Artic Silver or whatever, you have to remove ALL of the original compound. And believe me, thats no fun (I honestly don't know how you can remove it w/o scratching the HS surface)

I'd say just keep it stock.

or just get a Intel Pentium.
