It most likely has costs of labor and all into it, I'm sure a lot of setup was done by volunteers also. But most likely apple gave them a nice discount for buying 1100 duallies. I'm sure the amd could do it, but question is of a stable platform that is as easy to setup as os x is. I'm sure another *nix could do it, but probably would take more programing customization for it.
