Tell us more about your location. 1 story or 2? Where will the access point be?
What kind of distances? What are the walls made of? Do you have many 2.4Ghz cordless phones?

I'm in Southern CA, Rosemead. The house is 1 story. Two houses, front and back. The distance is about 20 yards or less. The walls are made of drywall and blocks. I don't have a 2.4G cordless phone for the moment but maybe will buy one in the future. I don't understand what's access pint is. Thanks

You should probably go with an 802.11g router with detachable antenna(s). This gives you the best speed, and will allow you to upgrade the antenna to an amplified one.
I'm using the Linksys WRT54G, and it works pretty well. I'm using the WSB24 signal amplifier with it. Leon is using both of these as well. It's not the fastest one out there (the US Robotics one probably is), but it works well, is stable, and I've had no problems with it. |

I love my SMC Barricade-G - it has some of the best security features that I have seen in a wireless router and I believe that it is faster than the Linksys.

I don't actually have a wireless setup going right now but am planning on doing so. I did some research on the subject of A, B, and G. A and G are the faster standard, A being on the 5.4GHz band while G is on the 2.4GHz band. This makes G more compatible because a G Wireless Access Point (the transmitter that transmits to the wireless receivers) will work with B devices as well. I'm not sure if a B Wireless Access Point will work with a G NIC or device. Prices of B NICs and stuff are coming down right now so it may be advantageous to get a B NIC for situations where you just need access but not a lot of speed (surfing the web).
My suggestion is to get a G Wireless Access Point and either a B or a G NIC. As for sharing one Internet access between two houses, you may run into problems where the signal can't get past the walls. I was trying to help a friend with a similar setup try to wirelessly connect his computer, which is in his house, to his dad's network in a house 25' away. He was using the Linksys signal booster as well as a repeater (receives the signal from the Wireless Access Point and repeats it so that a different area can have a strong signal) and we were having problems getting past the stucco walls. We never did get it to work and we were using B devices on a B network (I believe that B has the best coverage). |
