Cisco Question
I have a Cisco 2511 router that I got from work. Nobody seems to know whether or not it has ever been configured. I am a novice and cannot figure our how to get into it. There is an rj45 console port on it. From what I read I need a rollover patch cable, wich I made. I do not know what to do from here. I cannot figure our how to get into the router via http. I read about getting an adapter and hooking it up to a com port and using a hyperterminal connection from my pc. Can anybody explain what connector is needed, where I might get it and how to get the hyperterminal connection going? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

take the rollover cable and plug it into the console port on the back of the router. Hyperterminal is a built in windows program, usually located in the start menu| accessories | communications area (XP)
Set up a hyperterminal session with 9600kps and leave just about everything default. That (if i'm remembering correctly) get you to the router prompt. From there you should be able to log in, and then throughly get lost in your wonderful new command line interface ![]() |

Thanks for the help! Where do I plug the patch cable into my computer at? The NIC or some adapter attached to the serial port? If the NIC, what host name and port should I use for the hyperterminal connection? If the serial port, what adapter do I need and where can I get it?

^^ Serial port. Once you get into it you can configure an IP and do telnet. I dont recall thier routers doing HTTP, but that may be because I've never tried. I prefer command prompt.

You need one of these:
and one of these: (You can get them both from http://www.anthonypanda.com) Plug the RJ45 into the Cisco, and the 9-pin into your serial port. Fire up hyperterminal & connect to com1 and away you go. There is a command that you'll probably need to reset everything to factory defaults (if you don't have the passwords to get in). Sorry, I can't remember the command off the top of my head but I'm sure someone here knows. |
