question about the ipod

is it true the internal (and non-replaceable) battery is only good for 18 months?

The battery "can" die in as little as 18 months, it all depends on how much it's used..........most lithium-ion batteries are rated at up to 500 charge / discharge cycles. After that, battery life will decrease (up to the point where the battery won't even hold a charge).

As for the non-removeable part, Apple has now begun offering a battery replacement kit for around $100.

I have the original version ipod, bought over 2 yrs ago. It still runs. i also use it daily. The battery is weaker, but still going strong. It used to get around 10 hrs. It now does 7. I don't complain since these days i'm only using it for about 3 hrs a day. It also holds a charge very well when not in use.

I gues it depends on the user. maybe i lucked out. I do know that they changed the price to replace the battery for $99.00.

For those buying a new ipod, you can also get applecare that gets an extra year of coverage for $69. I'd suggest for the new purchasers and those who have bought a new iPod in the last year to wait until the last minute to buy the applecare if their battery is running low then you can save a bit to get the battery replaced.

Also to note, that the iPod has only been out for just about 2 years and the models that are starting to die are the G1 models that used lithium polymer batteries. With the new design G3 models they switched to lithium ion. My guess is perhaps li-polymer is still too new of a technology and perhaps Apple realized this in the long run and did the switch to the better known li-ion form. Only way we'll find out is in time I guess.

i have a g2 ipod and it still is going strong. I use it almost everyday to listen to music at work. When I was in school, i used it whenever I had to cross campus. I have had the things for about 18 months now and have yet to experience anything like those guys are complaining about.

Don't drop those iPods! Li-Po batteries are known, in radio controlled airplanes, to catch on fire if the plane crash lands. It isn't immediate, the initial impact acting like lighting a fuse.

I think they tried to use a different battery than Li-Ion because these require additional circuitry or else they tend to explode if overcharged, allowed to drain past a certain threshold voltage, or are drained too fast.

Hehe. . . that must be a compelling reason to go Li-ion on the new models.
