headphone recommendations

I wanna get my bro a set of headphones for xmas. Something he can use for his discman or computer. I was thinking about the Sony cans, but from what I hear, they break rather easily. And for the love of heaven, I cant find that one thread that polls on which headphones ppl here on G|A uses.

so a lil help would be apreech'd.

danke,
daUnit

My Sennheiser just arrived today from amazon.com. It sounds great already without the burn-in process.

I'll agree that Sony's tend to break easily..... I've gone through three pairs in just under three years (and yes, I used them for my Discman and such as well - they did travel with me a lot).

Sennheisers are good, but I don't know how "portable" they are.

I bought the PX100. They are foldable and come with a platic case. I would say they are more portable than my 7 yrs-old Alwa headphones.

This one? (what kind of headphones do u like?)

I have the sony street style's and i've used them everyday for atleast 2.5 years... They've kept nicely. Of course it helps that i take care of my stuff.

For the up to $80 range and no specific for style of cans, check out the grado sr60s, they are possibly the best headphones for under $100. Especially great since they can be powered by portable players easily.

Yeah the senns are good buuut, grados rock the low budget range, looks are just one thing, but definitely don't relate to the performance.

The open-air design means a seal isn't made around the ears to shut out noise both ways. So near by people can hear the cans if you got them pumped. I suggest you check out www.headphone.com for more information.

Actually the senn hd-280 pros can be found as low as $70 after rebate. It is not an open-air design and the seal it makes around your ears are quite solid, you can barely hear anything outside of it.

www.headwize.com is also a good link to do research

thats another thing closed cans just don't sound as good to most over open ear style cans. Can be very subjective, but generally thats the trend. Not knocking the senns 'cause they are good headphones too. If you want some closed cans though, beyerdynamic makes a better set for monitoring.

I uh, fourth the Senns. Great phones, and I personnally hate with a passon most open air cans. Grados are nice though, and frankly, no one looks good with headphones on, period, so looks are a pretty pointless thing to worry about.
