1. You want to buy a laPtop, not a labtop

2. Centrino uses less power (longer battery life) & it optimized to work with wireless. P4M is slightly cheaper.

3. Dell is better (IMHO)

4. Depends on what you want to do with it... keep in mind that there are very few components on a laptop that you can upgrade, so get what you need today. You can add more RAM & a bigger HD, but that's about it.

Get a Dell laptop with Centrino. They perform at about 2.2GHZ P4 equivalent.

I spent $1750 on mine and part of that is a $400 rebate (complete care for 3 yrs), so it will last for a while.

Warranty is whatever you want to spend on it... you can get up to a 3 year, on site warranty (they come to your house, you don't have to take it anywhere). I HIGHLY recommend the additional accidental damage coverage. In case you accidentally drop it down the stairs or back over it with your car, they will repair it (if possible) or give you a new machine.

As far as waiting until after christmas... probably won't make much of a difference, other than the longer you wait to purchase a machine, the cheaper it'll be. There's never a perfect time to buy, because no matter when you buy, 6 months later the machine will be cheaper. If you need it now, buy it now.

Centrino uses an M processor. Centrino is a power saving package that includes the CPU and the wireless card. Combined, Centrino saves a lot of energy (so they claim).
