less reading:

regular, or interlaced, shows only every other line of the picture every frame. tv's show 480 lines of resolution, 30 frames a second. in the first frame it will show only the odd lines and the second frame it will show the even frames and so on.

progressive shows all the lines on every frame. in order to use progressive scan, you need to have a display that can support it.

so does that mean that a progressive scan DVD player will not work on a regular TV?

You can have a progressive scan DVD player work with a regular TV but the picture will be limited. Working off of what Tommy said, Progressive scans shows every line, in ever frame. A normal tv only shows even lines then odd lines and switches every frame. Thus the normal tv with progressive scan will only show every other line. If you upgrade to a better tv, then you will see the every line in every frame.

ok...
so another question.

are all computer dvd-players progressive scan?

i'm guessing it's software dependent (unless you have the old school dvd decoder cards).

so, let's say you have a computer with dvi in, can you just plug it up to your computer and have just as good/better playback compared to standalone dvd players?

IMO Computer DVD player connection to TV is a royal pain in the ass, it's so much easier to just buy a nice dvd player. too many cables and selecting crap. Ugh. But I don't know if DVD ROM drives are progessive scan. I doubt it. I could be wrong. I probably am.

huh? if you comp has a dvi out you can hook it up to a monitor with a dvi in. this image is going to be sharper than an image over vga.

a computer dvd rom drive just reads the info on the disc and lets software or separate hardware do the decoding. if you are running your monitor in a progressive refresh mode (you probably are), your software should be able to display it as a progressive image.

but, if you are planning to connect your comp to your tv, and your tv is not a progressive scan tv, it will still show you the interlaced image. same with a standalone dvd player, it will still work, but you will only get an interlaced image because thats all it can show.

well...I'm saying you have a hdtv with a dvi-in.

if you were to hook that up with your computer, then would that quality be better than a standalone?

I aggree here. Set-top boxes are better. As far as the DVD-ROM question...if your TV/Plasma has a DVI-in, your output from an DVI-out video card should be as good or better than a good RGP component-out DVD player.
