tape drive question
I am replacing an old broken HP DAT 24 drive. If I purchase one of the new HP DAT 24 drives, I will be compatible with the old tapes that were made right? I figured it would be, but the HP site kind tries to make it sound like it is upgraded, although most of the specs that I can recall are the same. If you know anything about the compatibility, please let me know what you think. THANKS!

i work kinda as an independent computer setup and troubleshooter for a bunch of companies. They essentially call me with a quote they got from a computer company for say relocating there 5 computers, printers, and a few other pieces of hardware to a new location or to replace and install a new tape drive. I give them a price well under what is qutoed, like i have two current jobs one the company was quoted $1200, but i offered to do it for $600 and the other was the tape drive thing, the company was quoted $900 for a new HP DAT 24 and $200 to essentially swap them. I told them i can beat the hardware cost by atleast half and install for $100. These companies always take my deal, and most jobs like these take me like 3 to 4 hours tops....anyway that is why i just wanted to verify the tape drive thing!

I think it might be as simple as verifying that the drives use the same tape format. I don't know much about them but I have a Sony DDS Tape Drive and my only concern is that I get the right media for it.

Does HP's website not list what type of tapes the new drive uses? Just compare that to your current tapes.
