seagate vs. wester_digital

Hello,
I want to buy this 80GB hardrive, and the one from seagate and western digital look the same. I was wondering if you guys have any preferences to the manufacturer. They're both serial ATA.

I'm going to use the harddrives for the OS, not really for storage.

Seagate 80GB 7200rpm 8mb cache, ST380013as

WesternDigital, 80GB, 7200rpm, WD800JD

PS: the WD has a 3 year warranty, but the seagate's is only 1 year.

IMHO, if all the specs are the same, go with the longer warranty. Even if the drive craps out in a year, it gets replaced for free.

You might want to doublecheck on the WD warranty, as they've reduced them to 1 year of late.

WD SE drives also come with an 8MB buffer, vs. the standard 2MB on most drives....

Both drives are 8mb caches...I'm leaning toward WD.

Actually my WD is quieter than my Maxtor.

Go with WD.

i have a 80GB seagate in my system. The seagate SATA drives are the base drives apple uses in the G5.

Performance wise its great. Acoustically its quiet, but not too quiet. The loudest part of my setup is the fan blowing in a firewire enclosure. My system only makes noise on boot (All fans power up to full speed, then slow to their needed speed) and when I do intensive disk writing.

I would also go with the best warranty.

In general, with the latest 8mb buffer drives, I've found WD to be slightly faster but louder.

Segate.
Have used both. The Seagate is much, much, much more quiet and cooler. Seagate has a much better rep for their drives also. I have never heard of a major failure rate on a Seagate, like I have for WD, Maxtor and IBM.

The happiest I have ever been wit ha a drive is with a Seagate. I would buy a WD if it was much cheaper, but anything important I would still store on a Seagate.
